I started learning German when I was thinking of applying to colleges in the country1. The Max Mueller Bhavan, Germany’s cultural institute in India, offers multiple language courses but I always wanted to start learning myself, transitioning to a paid course when I get to around an A2 level of proficiency.
I knew Duolingo was never an option. I had last used the app back in school when I was trying out their Spanish course and realized that’s its just too basic to learn any language seriously. It also felt like the app promoted rote learning. I talked to Harveen about it and she recommended the Language Transfer method. What attracted me immediately, among other things, was that the app was completely free and their method was something I hadn’t seen anybody else promote. I decided to give it a shot and along with other resources, I’m currently completing their German course.

While I’m not sure if Germany will be the country I end up going to, I’m going to continue learning the language because one aspect of the language learning process fascinates me more than anything — the ability to develop a new personality.
